About Jorge Pedro
About Jorge Pedro:
Born in Paraná, in the southeast of Brazil, in 1955, Jorge Pedro has been interested in sculpture since he was 15 years old, after taking a course in welding. Early in his career he developed this technique to make flowers out of steel. Later on he received a commission to duplicate a work by the Brazilian master Di Cavalcanti (“Os Retirantes”). From then on, he started to alternate between painting and sculpture, trying out new ideas in wood collage.
His studies where developed in different areas, notably Theology and Journalism. He is a founding- member of the Academy of Art and Culture of the State of Paraná. Since 1996, he has been developing different work, influenced by the Italian artist Vito Campanella and the German Max Ernest.
Jorge Pedro uses the assemblage technique, both in sculpture and painting or collage. The hallmark of his work is the use of materials from many different mediums, that are no longer commercialized, like recuperated and recycled wood, from demolitions, and which today are instinct in the market like peroba, cedro, pinho-araucária and embuia.
Another characteristic in the art of Jorge Pedro is the influence of the Japanese culture. When he was 15 years old, he started living with his Japanese stepfather, who influenced his interest in this culture. This led him to study the structure of Japanese art, an influence present in some of the artist’s collections.
